How does extreme poverty affect children’s right?

Right to life

When there is excess poverty which will lead to excess hunger, this will lead to excess starvation and the outcome will obviously be death. Hunger hence will directly affect the child’s right to life directly or indirectly in that it will lead to the death of the mother.

Right to education

Every child has the right to education and when there is poverty, the child will be denied a right to study and pursue his or her dream because the parents will lack the funds to educate him or her. Also, when there is poverty, the child will also have to make ends meet for the family and hence will miss going to school, hence shattering his or her future.

Right to food

In the poverty stricken areas, food is not easily accessible. All the children have the right to food and must therefore be fed equally and when they are not given food, they may die and this directly relates with right to life.

Right to clothing

When there is poverty and there is little money, people would tend to consider buying food instead of clothing which is every Childs right.

There are effects when a child has no clothing and these are diseases that are very infectious and may also lead to the death of the child. This also relates to the right: right to health.

How can children participate in reducing hunger?

Through education

Through education the children will know their rights and when they are educated, they will be able to know how to deal with the saga. The children will need to be educated to gain the essentials tactics and know the way ahead of them. They can also educate their fellow peers on what knowledge they have.

Through creating awareness

When the government creates awareness, they may also involve the children to pass the information to both the elders and their peers. This can be done in conjunction with the media like the radio stations, television stations and even the social sites where most of the youth dominate and may be the best way to do this.

Participation in campaigns and world organizations

An example of the is the millennium development goals and the other campaigns that educate people on how eradicate poverty and hunger in the world.

How does extreme poverty affect children's rights?

Poverty affects children directly and very strongly. Most of the people who suffer from poverty are children and that's the most terrible thing. The highest poverty level in the world is in Africa and South Asia.

In my country the term poverty showed up only in mid-nineties, before it was a problem only to a few people, who simply didn’t want to work. But at the end of nineties a lot of people became unemployed and had to face a lot of hardship, just to ensure themselves with their basic necessities. A group of people emerged, the society got sort of polarized. Sadly the inequality in society still remains in Latvia and poverty level in Latvia is really high at this time.

This affects both adults and children, but for the children it’s even worse, because children’s body is weaker and it needs more care, while it’s growing.

How can children participate in reducing hunger?

Nowadays children are a lot different from what they used to be. Parents give their 6-year-old children (imagine a teenager) money, so they can buy whatever they want. This means that a child is practically an adult when it comes to shops and buying.

When shopping, children can choose products which support charity for Third World countries and help reduce hunger or kids could simply donate themselves.

The biggest problem for adults as well is that everyone thinks that there is no point in donating for two reasons: one - the money doesn't go where it should, the other - I don't have enough to donate. The thing is that almost everyone has the second on mind but they have enough money, so if everyone stopped thinking like that, it would have a huge impact on the poverty in the world.

Poverty affects children’s rights in many ways, but there is one problem that stands out. Poverty can cause children to drop out of school, in order to help their family obtain the necessities of life. Children must go to work, take care of their siblings, or even go and beg on the streets. There are many ways that we can help out. In Canada, one way is to volunteer at our local food bank, or even donate a few canned goods. Around 3% people in Canada are assisted by food banks each month, and 38% of those people are children. We could even try raising money, by having fundraisers for organizations in support of poverty and hunger. Remember, it only takes one person to make a difference.

Extreme poverty is an issue that people deal with on a daily basis. They live not knowing if they’ll see tomorrow or if they’ll ever witness their children happy and healthy.  Poverty affects children by stripping them of their own rights. Some People around the world get the privilege to live in a community in which they have shelter and care from others. Many people around the world are suffering huge losses from poverty, every 3 seconds a poor soul perishes away because of poverty. The worst part about that is that most of those vanishing are under five years old. Extreme poverty is linked to abuse and lack of food or shelter. We can help others and reduce the number of people battling poverty by doing several things such as donating food in schools and feeding people in our own community. Children can play a role in reducing poverty, by helping at food banks, fundraising and etc. There are endless options. One thing that we have learned is that no matter what state you are in, you can always help others.  We have the power to give others a better life and provide children with their own rights by reducing hunger and poverty.

Each day, more than 30,000 children die of poverty-related causes. Today, poverty kills one child every 3 seconds. Children are the primary victims of poverty, and poverty is the principal cause of violations pertaining to Children’s Rights.

Definition of Child Poverty

A general definition of poverty is “a state of existence in which one lacks many of life’s basic necessities.” The poor person is someone “who lacks what he needs”; and a poor child is “a very young boy or girl who lacks much of what is needed to survive.”

From an economic perspective, poverty can be defined in two ways:

  •  absolute poverty:  revenues are insufficient to support the individual’s physical needs;
  • relative poverty:  the individual’s revenues are inferior to those possessed by other members of the community.

It is important to note that the economic definition of poverty is invariably tied to the question of monetary wealth.

However, poverty cannot be defined simply in terms of its material dimension; one must also take into account a person’s “ability to use the resources that he or she possesses.” (1)

Beyond the monetary dimension, poverty has an effect on other fundamental rights. The dignity and self-worth of individuals are affected. Poverty impedes the exercise of individual liberties; it threatens the security of one’s existence (absence of revenue and of access to housing, medical care and justice) and undermines personal development across the board (intellectual, cultural, familial and social). (2)

With regard to children, the definition of poverty should not be limited to a consideration of insufficient financial resources. In effect, children who face poverty are also deprived of their fundamental rights and of future prospects.

Poverty hampers a child’s ability to survive; it impedes all aspects of his or her development (physical, mental, emotional, cultural, social, familial, spiritual, etc.).

The impact of poverty is so great that one can say without hesitation that poverty is the principal source of children’s rights violations.

Consequences of Poverty on Children

The consequences of poverty on children are devastating. Today, poverty kills one child every three seconds.

Poverty deprives children of their fundamental right to life. In addition, it deprives them of educational opportunities and prevents them from gaining access to medical care, clean water, food, shelter, security and protection, information, etc.

Poverty thus constitutes a veritable threat to childhood and violates children’s rights (as defined by the International Convention of Children’s Rights) as a whole.

How to End Child Poverty

Respecting commitments made by the States to implement fundamental rights as enunciated by the International Convention of Children’s Rights would go a long way toward defeating poverty.

Respecting commitments made by the States to implement fundamental rights as enunciated by the International Convention of Children’s Rights would go a long way toward defeating poverty.

“No society can really defeat poverty without doing everything it can, in a vigorous and long-term manner, to ensure that all of its members have a right to and are able to receive basic medical care, nutritious food and a decent education.” (4)

In order to respect Children’s Rights, it is imperative that extreme poverty be defeated worldwide.
